This note was printed in England and went into circulation only with the overprint "1000 Drachmai" at the beginning of 1941.
The ship "Zakynthos" which carried stocks of these notes from from the Bank of Greece to Crete. was bombed off Monemvasia/Malvasia by a German aircraft, and many sacks of these notes were seized by local villagers. Some of them circulated later with forged overprints.
forged overprints are best recognized by the style of the letters of "ΑΘΗΝΑΙ 1939"
